Hubbard & Co.

Past Projects 2002

1. Private Home, near Ingleside

This beautiful home was probably built around 1870, and was in original condition.

Hubbard & Co. embarked on a major campaign of sympathetic improvement. Exterior work involved re-pointing, repairs to all windows, a new cedar shingle roof complete with copper flashing and repairs to soffit and fascia. The exterior trim was also painted.

The kitchen wing underwent major changes. An existing wood frame addition was so deteriorated it had to be demolished. This was redesigned slightly and rebuilt. The area of the original kitchen was backfilled and an in-floor heating system was installed. The kitchen cabinets were custom built in our shop using old pine lumber salvaged from the original structure. A granite countertop with tumbled marble backsplash completes the cabinets. The kitchen also includes a custom built fireplace, the addition of a large door opening on the south side and a second window on the west side. The floors in the kitchen wing are finished in a handmade Mexican tile.

The exterior walls of the home were insulated, rewired and re-drywalled. All upstairs floors were sanded and refinished. The walls and trim were painted in appropriate colours.

2. Windy O’Neill’s Pub, Toronto

3. Winchester United Church, Winchester

The United Church in Winchester, Ontario, was built as a Methodist Church in 1883. This project had 2 components.

Our masonry crew set about repointing the west facade. This involved setting up scaffolding 11 lifts high. All the joints were chipped out and repointed. One stone on the left of the window was missing and our lead mason replicated a new one. This stone had to be epoxied into place. Can you pick it out?

The other aspect of this job was re-drywalling of the sanctuary. We started this by building a floor over the pews. Our carpenters then repaired the decorative frieze detail and a complicated drywall job was carried out by our talented drywaller. Note the barrel vault and the gothic windows. The job was finished up by our painter who matched the former colours and repainted the stencil above the pulpit.

4. Private Home, near Oxford Mills

This circa 1860 home required additional space for a growing family – and for Dad's pool table. Hubbard & Co. assisted in developing a design that complemented the historic style of the home, while meeting the client's budget.

The project took about three months to complete. It includes about 1200 square feet of living space. The addition is finished in a board and batten exterior. The interior boasts reproduction trim and a period style wet bar.
